Poly Biography

I love reading about other poly people, past, present, or future. This section only covers real people, so we'll have to limit it to the past or present here.

There's more poly biography titles here.

(Also, be sure to check out the More Polyamory in Fiction web page for the new version of The Harrad Experiment. The 1990 edition contains a new, 30-plus page autobiography of Robert Rimmer.)

The Motion of Light in Water

Samuel R. Delany
A Richard Kasak Book

Delany tells of his life in the East Village, the beginnings of his career in writing, his marriage to the poet Marilyn Hacker, and dozens of other topics that intertwine with his life in the 1950s and 1960s.

delany's autobiographical style is direct and somewhat easier going than much of his more technical non-fiction (literary criticism and so on). He is a gifted writer, and here paints a very clear portrait of a fascinating period of time for him.

I have not read, but am looking forward to reading, Heavenly Breakfast, which covers another part of his life.

Bettina Z. Mojo rates this book a 8 (Excellent) and says:
This was one of the first books I turned to when I realized I was moving into a polyamorous relationship. The writing is vibrant, and even though his life and way of living was/is so different from mine, it helped me approach this new thing as one of many options. I particularly like that he scattered especially meaningful or pertinent section from his wife's poetry. Reading her (Marilyn Hacker's) Selected Poems, which includes "The Navigators", for her perspective on the life they made together, was also quite illuminating. (And is a good book in its own right, having won the National Book Award.)

Three in Love: Menages a Trois from Ancient to Modern Times

Barbara Foster
Michael Foster
Letha Hadady
HarperCollins

Three in Love provides provides numerous biographies of many of the most famous menages (triads) of the past or present. The book is extrememly extensive, covering dozens of triads. While this books examination of only one form of polyfi relationship may seem a little limiting to many, I personally found something warm and comforting in the procession of triads.

Because the authors are in a long-term triad themselves, I find that they bring a different viewpoint to the areas of history their biographies cover, and that alone makes this book fascinating reading.

Three in Love is available both at Amazon and at the publisher iUniverse.

The authors also maintain a website you'll want to check out at www.threeinlove.com.

H. S. McCoy rates this book a 6 (Good) and says:
Three In Love is a worthwhile book only because of its historical overviews; any disclosure about the real-life triad of its authors will be disappointing to most readers. As supplemental reading, however, an insight into these author's personal lives can be read for free in Nerve Magazine under the essay section. Featuring histories delivered in essay format from the individual viewpoints of all three authors, this presentation is possibly more insightful--and definitely less time consuming--than their book.

Melissa rates this book a 8 (Excellent) and says:
This book was a gift from a friend showing her support of my lifestyle and I must say that it is a long read but, I enjoyed it. I found the authors' relationship to be quite helpful in many respects in dealing with my own situation. A history it is but what else is history for but to learn from the past.
