Robert H. Rimmer
Prometheus Books
Robert Rimmers 1966 book is really one of the classic
forerunners of the modern polyamory movement. And, while
Harrad very occasionally feels a bit dated, this remains one of
the most realistic and detailed picture of poly relationships I've
come across.
In Harrad, a pair of sociologists create a social experiment in
which a group of carefully selected college students live together,
are encouraged to sleep together responsibly, and in general to think
for themselves. The novel follows four main characters through the
eyes of their journals, as they explore different relationships with
each other, and come to understand that love doesn't necessarily prove
to be exclusive.
By following the process and progress of multiple students from the
beginning
of the program through several years, Rimmer gives himself the
chance to explore a lot of the feelings and issues that come up in
multiple relationships, which adds greatly to the depth of the
novel.
This 25th Anniversary Edition of the book includes something else
I found fascinating--a thirty-three page mini-autobiography of
Rimmer, who found himself involved in multiple relationships. There's
also an updated and complete bibliography.
(NOTES: Rimmer has a new (1995) book on sexual ethics that I
haven't read yet entitled
Let's Really Make Love: Sex, the Family, and Education in the
Twenty-First Century.
In addition,
don't miss Rimmer's own
Harrad 2000
web site.

This book follows the life of an underground radical, who is married
but has always been polyamorous. (In this book poly is dealt with
as kind of a matter of fact aside.)

This book is about a woman who is insitutionalized (state psych
ward) after she beats up her niece's pimp. While she is hospitalized
she begins to travel back and forth between her own time and the
world far in the future (think Slaughterhouse Five -- "Billy Pilgrim
came unstuck in time"), where everyone is essentially bi, poly,
and somewhat gender-free (Piercy even created a gender-neutral pronoun
for the future-time parts of the book)--Piercy's thoughts about
poly, sexuality, and gender in this book are wonderful!!!

Suzanne wrote, gave this
book a 7, and added:
Describes a long-term poly triad (FMF) that love eachother deeply.
It deals honestly with jealousy, and focuses on what happens to
the triad when one person changes.
